Hand powered brick extrusion machine made by E. Gage & Co, Bedford

This machine made bricks, using thin wires to shape the clay. Bricks made on this type of machine were very economical and were used for construction projects. They were often covered by more decorative bricks. In Northampton in the 1800s many small brickworks developed locally to be close to the natural resources required to make bricks and new building sites for houses and factories.
