Furthest travelled object

We think that this is one of the furthest travelled objects in our ethnography collection.

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
Boomerang

It was made in Australia by Aboriginal people living in the area near Melbourne. This area was part of the Kulin Nation, made of the Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djajawurrung and the Wathaurung people. The boomerang is made of wood and is carved on one side. It was sent to John Wilson in Northampton by his brother James Wilson who was living in Australia. John donated it to the museum collection in the early 1900s. The museum founders wanted to bring the world to Northampton with objects collected from different continents. It was probably made directly for a tourist market. John was not the only one to receive such a gift. Tourists continue to bring back similar reminders of their experiences in Australia today.
