Blue abstract painting by Ben Mathews

The artist Ben Mathews was born in Duston, Northampton in 1889.

He trained and qualified as an architect before becoming an artist. He went to Paris in 1923 and studied painting at the Academie Modern under Othon Frietz and Ferdinand Léger. He lived and painted principally in France between the two World Wars. After 1947, he spent a long time in Spain, and his work was mainly of Mediterranean subjects, as this depiction of a Mediterranean bay demonstrates. This is one of Mathews' later works as it shows his more abstract style rather than the expressionistic approach he adopted in his earlier years.

Oil on board

This work was inspired by the blue skies and seas of a Mediterranean bay. This work is one of Mathews' later works when he lived by the coast in Spain. The Mediterranean's spectacular azure colours have been a rich source for artists dating back to the Venetian renaissance, particularly for the French impressionists.

Northampton Museums and Art Gallery supports Art UK, which is an online home for public art collections across the UK. Over 650 works from our fine art collection including oil paintings and sculpture are accessible online through Art UK. Further artworks by Ben Mathews are accessible here.
