Many of the panels depict feasting, drinking and celebration. This panel shows a jester drinking wine straight from a vat. In Tudor England wine was mainly drunk by the wealthy, with ale being drunk by the lower classes. Most wine was imported from Europe but there were some vineyards in southern England. Throughout the Oak Room panelling symbolism of wine growing and consumption can be seen. The prestige and status that wine drinking brought was obviously important to the Bernard family.
