Those of you who grew up in Northampton may be familiar with the iconic figures of Alfie the Ape and Charlie the Chimp. |

Alfie the Ape will be recognized by thousands of former Northampton youngsters who will remember him from the children’s shoe department at Beatties in the Grosvenor Centre. He spent many hours swinging away there until his retirement in 2007 when the shoe department closed. Charlie the Chimp swung in the children's department window of Gordon Scott's shoe shop on Abington Street. When the shop closed he went off to another branch to continue his swinging antics. |
