Military Enquiries Volunteer
Main purpose of role:
This role is to assist museum staff to answer military enquiries by researching Northamptonshire Regiment and the Northamptonshire Yeomanry archives and collections held at Northampton Museums & Art Gallery, and to collate research for future exhibitions.
Main duties:
- Review enquiries
- Search archives and collections at Northampton Museums and Art Gallery
- Search archives at the Local Studies Library and Record Office
- Use internet resources
- Collate information into the research template for the history curator
- Contact other museums/archives for information
- Search national archives
- Collate information into the research template for history curator
- Draft responses to enquirers
Location:
From home, Abington Park Museum, Northampton Museums and Art Gallery, Northampton Records Office and Central Library
Approximate time commitment and duration:
Attendance at a meeting on the first Thursday of the month to discuss enquiries 1000 - 1130
Every Thursday morning 1000 - 1330 at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery or Abington Park Museum
Other locations by arrangement as required for research purposes.
Useful skills required:
- Interest in Military History
- Good understanding of the English Language
- Good written skills
- Good research skills
- Able to use the internet to search in a coherent way
- Able to use Microsoft Office packages to provide a summary of the collated research
Training provided:
Military history research and object handling
Skills volunteers can develop in the role:
Research skills, written communication skills, Military historical knowledge.
