Learning Support Volunteer

Main purpose of role:

Support the Learning and Events Officer with administration and delivery of the formal learning programme including administrative tasks, preparation and management of learning resources, supporting school session delivery and evaluation / reporting.

Main duties:

Assist staff with the following:

  • Supporting administration of the formal learning programme - school bookings, staffing, scheduling, confirmation and evaluation/data recording
  • Preparing materials and resources for school sessions
  • Managing learning resources - condition checking of handling resources, stock levels of consumables, preparing loan kits for collection.
  • Assiting with collation and keeping records of resources.


Northampton Museum and Art Gallery & Abington Park Museum

Approximate time commitment and duration:

These opportunities are regular and ongoing with weekly commitment preferred (could be term time only). Suggested commitment in region of 3-4 hours, one day a week (Monday to Friday). 
Additional opportunities depending on school bookings, requests for support will be sent out in advance of booked school sessions. 
Volunteering will generally take place at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery, but there may also be occasional volunteering activity at Abington Park Museum.

Useful skills required:

  • Team player but also able to work independently
  • Flexible and willing to help with a variety of tasks
  • IT Literate – including use of Microsoft office including Word and Excel
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – experience of working with children / schools
  • Interest in / experience of history, museums and education
  • Manual handling – object handling, moving equipment and materials.

Training provided:

All training will be provided. You will be required to attend an induction session.

  • Working with pupils, teachers and schools
  • Development and evaluation of learning resources / methodology
  • Museum artefacts / collections experience and object handling
