Military Collections Care Volunteer
Main purpose of role:
Northampton Museum & Art Gallery has received grant funding from the Army Museums Ogilby Trust to document and make accessible 1500 military objects as part of a collections backlog project. The objects relate to both the Northamptonshire Regiment and the Northamptonshire Yeomanry and cover the period 1800 until 1960.
This is an opportunity to join a team of volunteers to help with researching these important objects. We are looking for people with various levels of experience and knowledge of military objects and collections. The end result of the project will be improved access to the military collections and the collections will be effectively cared for.
Main duties:
- Condition check objects
- Clean objects
- Take record images
- Pack objects
Location:
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery & Abington Park Museum
Approximate time commitment and duration:
1 day a week Monday – Friday to be confirmed (10.00am to 4.00pm) or ½ day a week (either morning or afternoon)
Useful skills required:
- Good practical skills
- Attention to detail and procedures
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
- Interest in military collections

- Taking Record images
You will also be required to attend an induction session.
Skills volunteers can devleop in the role:
- Skills and knowledge in how to care for historic objects
- Packing, storage and preventative conservation of historic objects
- Condition checking of historic objects
