Exhibitions Installation Assistant Volunteer

Main purpose of role:

Assist the museum team with the installation and removal of objects and graphics for exhibitions.

Main duties:

Assist staff with the following:

  • Move objects from stores to galleries
  • Move exhibition cases and other display equipment
  • Unpack objects, record object locations, check objects against condition reports 
  • Photograph objects
  • Preparing objects for display/storage
  • Putting objects on display/in storage
  • Returning packing materials to store
  • Hanging artwork
  • Painting and making good of galleries

Location:

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery & Abington Park Museum

Approximate time commitment and duration:

A commitment to be available for full days would be required when the exhibitions need to be set up or taken down. Times will be communicated to the volunteer well in advance. Upcoming dates when volunteers are required: Tuesday 26 and Thursday 28 October, Thursday 18 November and agreed days between Monday 10 January and Friday 11 February.

Useful skills required:

  • Use of power tools
  • Ability to lift up to 16kg
  • Painting and decorating
  • Manual dexterity to handle museum objects, many are fragile and some are heavy
  • Good level of mobility to move collections around
  • Working as part of a team.
  • Clear handwriting

Training provided:

Manual handling, object handling

Skills volunteers can devleop in the role:

  • Team working

  • Manual handling
