Documentation Assistant Volunteer
Main purpose of role:
To assist the Registrar in a wide range of cataloguing and collections care activities
This role aims to help deal with a backlog in documentation whilst providing valuable experience for anyone with an interest in the cultural sector. Largely a desk based role, with some opportunities to get hands on with the collection
Main duties:
Assist staff with the following:
- Condition checking items to identify signs of deterioration
- Inputting details of objects onto the collections management system MODES from paper-based records
- Aiding in packaging objects and ensuring they are stored safely
- Collating information
- Updating both digital and paper records
- Digitalising paper records
Location:
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
Some work may occasionally take place in the Guildhall stores across the road from the Museum
Approximate time commitment and duration:
1 day a week (10.00am to 4.00pm) or ½ day a week (either morning or afternoon)
This will be an ongoing role and times and days can be amended to best suit the applicant
Useful skills required:
- Basic computer literacy
- Attention to detail
- Ability to follow procedure
- Basic research skills
- Ability to work as a team and independently
Training provided:
All training will be provided. You will be required to attend an induction session.
- Modes Complete 1.5 Collections management database training, creating new records and editing old ones.
- Documentation processes here at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
- Object handling
Skills volunteers can develop in the role:
- Chance to gain a strong understanding of how museums and art galleries function behind the scenes
- Opportunity to gain skills in the cultural sector
- Ability to use collections management systems
