The Green Man, also known as the foliate head is a common symbol in art and architecture of the Medieval and Tudor periods. It is most commonly seen in European churches. The true meaning of the Green Man is steeped in mystery. It is thought that he represents 'Jack-in-the Green' or the 'Garland King', a folklore figure, who is associated with May Day, spring and regrowth. There are many visual variations. This version is a ‘disgorging head’ where vegetation grows from his mouth. |
