It would have been part of the rations given to British troops during the First World War. It reads 'Army biscuit served out to the British troops with rations during the great European War Aug 1914'. These biscuits were mostly considered inedible due to a hard dry texture. Soldiers often crumbled the biscuit and added water to make a paste which could be added to mixed vegetables or stew. Examples of the biscuit do survive the war, being sent in the post home. |
