Inchbold was born in Leeds in 1830, he depicted Bolton Abbey in nearby Wharfedale on a number of occasions. His focus on the local ruin and landscape shows Inchbold’s admiration for his native Yorkshire. This painting also shows the inspiration Inchbold takes from nature, showing his interest in botanical realism. Inchbold followed the Pre-Raphaelites’ emphasis on truth to nature in his detailed recording of the foliage. |
