Ballet shoes

These pointe ballet shoes were made for ballet dancer and actress Moira Shearer.

Made of red satin they were made by ballet shoe makers Freed of London for Shearer to wear in the film The Red Shoes, 1948.

Twenty-five pairs were made to take her through all rehearsals and filming. This pair were prepared to be worn – the toes have been darned and the ribbons attached, but they were not ultimately worn.

Moira Shearer's ballet shoes are on display in the curved case in the shoe gallery.
