Wooden Ancient Egyptian coffin
This anthropoid top of a wooden inner coffin dates from the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt or 1600-1100 BCE. It would have covered a mumified body.
Purchased in 1900 from Mr Mills of Wellingborough, this reflects a period when the museum was collecting objects from around the world. The aim of the museum committee was to bring the wider world to the people of Northampton. In a period before mass media communication this would have been a way for people to find out about different cultures. It has been displayed at Abington Park Museum for many years and is fondly remembered by visitors as a curious object to find in a historic house. Do you remember this object? If so please share your memories with us.
