Northampton Museum and Art Gallery redevelopment
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery has undergone significant refurbishment and expansion. GSS Architecture are the architects, lead consultants and principal designers for the expansion project. The project has been developed over the last five years and has seen the previous museum offer significantly diversified, to meet the needs of modern visitors, whilst celebrating the town’s heritage.

The museum on Guildhall Road has doubled in size with the addition of a nine-metre-high glazed extension, which links the original museum to the Old Gaol Block, now home to a new Temporary Exhibitions Gallery, Shoe Gallery and schools activity space.
|
The Link includes a café and south-facing outdoor terrace, along with a new Shoe Gallery housed on the lower floor, showcasing Northampton’s internationally important shoe collection.
|
Northamptonshire’s history and shoe heritage is celebrated in an expanded shop and selling gallery, with a focus on local artists and makers.

The existing art gallery has undergone light refurbishment and will feature a range of changing exhibitions drawn from the museum’s extensive collections, as well as exhibitions focusing on local artists and touring shows. The revamped History Gallery includes new displays on lacemaking and post war development of Northampton. New teaching facilities will also be available, with a dedicated schools and activity space available for visits and workshops alongside a central hall capable of hosting major events and for corporate hire.

The new Temporary Exhibition Gallery at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery hosts a programme of changing exhibitions and associated events. It provides a secure and environmentally controlled space that can host significant touring exhibitions. The museum opens with a major temporary exhibition called We Are Northampton, which explores the character and history of Northampton, through people, places and events. Alongside this will be a retrospective of notable and prolific Northamptonshire artist Christopher Fiddes, called Challenging Perspectives, presenting work from his early career up to the present day.
