We worked with Opal22 Arts and Edutainment to better understand our African ethnography collections. The project sought to understand the people that made the objects, what they were used for and how they were created.

Asante stool – Osebo Dwa

For the Asante people wooden stools are very personal to each individual and only the owner can sit on their own stool.
Double bowl

These carved wooden bowls would hold foods to welcome visitors. They were made by Zulu people of South Africa.
Horn

Carved natural horn with head finial.
Knife

Ivory handled knife with head of a woman made by the West African Mangbetu tribe.
Beaded belt - Umutsha

Marriage belt made of glass beads by a Zulu woman for her husband.
