New Library Case Displays Explore Northamptonshire’s Geological Story

A new series of library case displays is now on show at the museum, exploring the geology that has shaped Northamptonshire’s landscape, industry and everyday life.

Titled “Shaped by Stone: Northamptonshire’s Geological Story,” the exhibition features objects from the museum’s geology collection, including items donated by Lord Northampton in the 1800s. Displays also include material from Northamptonshire Natural History Society and Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, alongside recent acquisitions such as an early medieval ring found in Farthingstone.

The exhibition will run as a four-month rotating display, with themes including Northamptonshire Geologists, From Greenhouse to Ice House, Northamptonshire Rocks and Industry, and Rockstars: Rocks and Minerals.

The first installations are currently on display in the following locations:

  • Northamptonshire Geologists – Weston Favell

  • From Greenhouse to Ice House – Daventry

  • Northamptonshire Rocks and Industry – Brackley

  • Rockstars: Rocks and Minerals – Towcester

Displays will rotate throughout the exhibition period, offering visitors the chance to explore different aspects of Northamptonshire’s geological story.

The cases were developed in partnership with Northamptonshire Natural History Society (celebrating their 150 anniversary this year) and Ian Clarke (RIGS co-ordinator).
