Using our extensive collection of objects related to shoemaking, students will learn about the intricate process of making shoes by hand.

They will learn about each of the many processes and tools that a shoemaker uses to make shoes by hand. There will be an opportunity through different activities to handle each of the pieces of equipment and tools, all of which are original museum objects.

This session is a great way for your students to find out more about the local area and the history of shoe making in Northampton.

Key stage 2 (KS2)

History, Design/Technology

1 hour

35 children plus supervising adults

History:

• a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality
• a study of an aspect or theme in British History that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066
• changes in an aspect of social history

Design and Technology:

• understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world
• pupils should be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making
