The facilitated Searching for the Saxons (Anglo-Saxon Life) workshop uses the extensive museum collection of real and replica artefacts to provide pupils with the opportunity to handle and investigate archaeological evidence to learn about everyday life in the past This workshop focuses on the early Anglo-Saxon period (5th to 7th centuries CE) before the widespread availability of written sources. Pupils should be taught about: Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons; local history. know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day: how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world. understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, understand the methods of historical (archaeological) enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed. |

Resources |
Background notes and details of the workshop are sent to schools on booking along with information about the museum's gallery displays relating to the period and suggestions for pupil activities. Extension - we also offer a hands-on workshop (60 minutes) for pupils to investigate Anglo Saxon art - with pupils able to design and make Anglo-saxon style brooches to take home with them. Please add details in the Special Requirements box of the online booking form if you would like to book an extension workshop. |
