Ladies Elizabeth and Georgiana Stanhope by James Ward RA

Elizabeth and Georgiana were the daughters of the Earl of Chesterfield and the painting was originally purchased and presumably commissioned by him so was originally part of the Earl of Chesterfield’s collection. James Ward was one of the outstanding artists of his day. Completed in 1816 it also represents the second highest charge made by Ward for one of his paintings at £525, partly due to its size. He also charged an additional £125 to add the fawn to the portrait.
