Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
Evening dress

We like to collect associated collection stories and this is a lovely example.

The donor was looking for a new dress for a dance at the Salon in Northampton. She saw this dress at Adnitts in the Drapery in Northampton for £25. This was twice as much as she would normally spend on a dress. She kept on looking but didn’t see anything as nice and in the end her husband said they would go back to Adnitts. It was a one off model gown and just happened to be in her size, so they bought it. The assistant asked if they had their car outside, which they did, and the donor remembers feeling like a princess as the dress was carried for them and laid in the car.
