Roman sarcophagus

This stone sarcophagus or tomb was discovered at the ironstone quarries in Duston in 1908. It has stood here in the Great Hall in Abington since it was found by the quarry workers. It contained the skeleton of a Romano-British woman.

She must have been of some importance to have been buried in such a fine tomb. Limestone does not occur in Duston so it would have been transported some distance; probably form the north of the county.

A museum for Abington

Lady Wantage donated Abington Manor to the Borough of Northampton along with the parkland. With the donation the building was changed to a museum, the north wing pulled down and the west wing rebuilt. In 1899, Abington Park Museum was opened in the centre of the park.
