Fireplace

The fireplace was added to the Great Hall in the 18th Century. It features a man playing the hurdy-gurdy.

A hurdy-gurdy is similar to a violin but is played cranking a wheel instead of a bow, and sounds like bagpipes.

A place of warmth

The fireplace was probably added by the Thursbys when they made improvements to the building. The original hall would have had a central fireplace and smoke would have escaped through the roof.
