Record details

Spectacle case

Purchased from Charles F. Allen, Market Square, Northampton in 1925. A case that held spectacles was just as important as the eyeglasses themselves.

A case would instantly allow someone to tell what social status they held and a little bit about their personal taste.

Metal, cloth, glass and paper

By the early 20th century spectacle wearing became more widespread. Key developments included the supply of glasses to troops in the First World War and optical companies began to supply spectacle cases with company names to help promote their services.
