Record details

New Maid vacuum cleaner

Made by Burrage and Boyd of Adnitt Road in Northampton, this was an upright non electric machine.

It worked on the principle that when pushed over a carpet the wheels turned an internal fan that provided quite considerable suction. This drew the dirt up into a canvas bag that was emptied as required.

Metal, fabric, rubber and wood

Burrage and Boyd was a company formed in 1932 which produced non-electric vacuum cleaners. The main components were made of cast aluminium from their foundry works. The success of this venture made the owners look for additional domestic products that could be made with the technology of aluminium casting, machining and finishing. After consulting metallurgists they found that by adding magnesium to the aluminium a silver look could be obtained after polishing. By 1937 they were producing a range of New Maid kettles, non-electric washing machines, gas washing machines, non-electric suction sweepers and non-electric rotary floor polishers.
