These buttons were found on the coast of New Zealand at Russell Bay on 3 October 1912. They are from the uniform of the 58th Regiment of Foot. They were presented to the 2nd Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment by Captain J. A. Hope-Johnson of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. |

The 58th Regiment of Foot under the command of Major Cyprian Bridge were stationed in New Zealand and became involved in the Maori Wars of 1845-1847, and spent a further eleven years in New Zealand after this campaign had ended. At the end of this posting many of the officers and soldiers chose to remain in New Zealand. |
