The Northamptonshire Yeomanry were formed as a volunteer cavalry under Lord Spencer of Althorp as commanding officer in 1794 in response to the possible invasion by France during the Napoleonic Wars. They were a locally raised force of around 750 men consisting of local landowners such as Sir John Dryden. They were stood down in 1812 when the threat of invasion ceased. Their distinctive uniform and equipment was devised at this time and they adopted the white horse of Hanover as their badge. |
