An archer is playing a flute to lure the birds away from the vines and is shooting them down with arrows. The man trapped in the vines may represent St Francis. One of St Francis’ miracles was that he caused a trampled vineyard to produce plentiful wine. Crowds had flocked to see St Francis and trampled a vineyard in their approach to the praying saint. Despite the damage, the vines produced double the usual harvest.
