Portraits of Northampton

To celebrate the wealth of characters and diversity of people who make up Northampton today, we commissioned photographer Paul O’Leary to create a series of 24 photographic portraits. Each one explores what it is to be a Northamptonian and how they contribute to the town.

The participants were photographed in ‘their place’ — a place that is important to them. The images represent different elements of town life: Work, Community, Sports, Leisure, Entertainment and Living in Northampton.

Just like the historical characters of the town, today’s members of the community also support the town that they are proud to be part of, continuing the story of Northampton.

Paul O'Leary

As a documentary photographer Paul O’Leary records the time in which we live, the lives of others and in an indirect way charts his own time on this planet. His work is mostly shot using film cameras. It is a process that requires time and allows the subject to drift off into his or her own thoughts during the shoot. His images merge the control and structure of Portraiture with Social Documentary’s ability to depict and reflect daily routine.
