The Shoemaker

This oil painting of a shoemaker is by David Teniers, the Younger and dates to about 1650.

It shows a shoemaker in his workshop. Shoemaking could be a lonely occuaption and there is a long tradition of shoemakers keeping birds for company. You can see the cage in the top right corner.

The shoemaker is sitting on a low stool with his tools on a small bench near him. You can see some of the tools of his trade including a shoemaker's knife and the stirrup (leather strap) that was used to hold the boot or shoe securely on the knee when he was lasting and sewing. The block under his foot raises up his knee to a more comfortable height for working.

The Shoemaker painting is on display in the curved case in the shoe gallery.
