Tiger shoes

These children's slip on shoes have tiger faces on their toes.

Made from silk with a cotton sole these children's shoes are from 1900-1920

In China the tiger is a symbol of power, bravery and stateliness. Embroidered on children’s shoes it becomes a symbol of protection against misfortune. It is supposed to ward off roaming spirits which might cause harm to the defenceless child.

These tiger shoes are on display in the Cultural Identity case in the shoe gallery.
