Yellow

Painted portrait of a lady, Miss Cotton of Madingley, who is shown seated wearing a yellow dress

Miss Cotton of Madingley from the circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller, c.1700, oil on canvas.

This portrait was created in the style of Sir Godfrey Kneller leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Kneller was famed for his portrayal of feminine beauty at court.

As the title suggest, the lady portrayed is part of the Cotton family who once resided in Madingley Hall from 1647 until the 1860s, during this time the hall was home to six generations of the Cotton family. The portrait is now on display in another country house, Abington Park Museum, which was once home to the Thursby family.
