Abstract painting by Ben Mathews entitled Deep Cala, abstract scene of the sea

Deep Cala by Ben Mathews, oil on board.

Ben Mathews was born in Duston, Northampton in 1889. He trained and qualified as an architect before becoming a painter. He went to Paris in 1923 and studied painting there at the Academie Modern under Othon Frietz and Ferdinand Léger. He lived and painted principally in France between the two World Wars.

After 1947, he spent a long time in Spain, and his work was mainly of Mediterranean subjects, as this depiction of a Mediterranean bay demonstrates. This is one of Mathews' later works as it shows his more abstract style rather than the expressionistic approach he adopted in his earlier years.
