Childrens' Activities Volunteer
Main purpose of role:
Northampton Museums & Art Gallery runs regular drop-in activities for children during the school holidays and occasionally at other times. This role will support the Public Programme Manager in creating and developing those activities.
Main duties:
Assist staff with the following:
- Scope ideas for children’s activities linking to museum themes and topics
- Scope ideas for children’s activities linked to the museum’s temporary exhibitions programme
- Create templates, worksheets etc for children’s activities
- Prepare all materials for the children’s activities well in advance of the sessions
Location:
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
Approximate time commitment and duration:
Approximately 2 days per month, depending on availability of volunteer and number of sessions to be prepared.
Days for volunteer to be on site either Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
Some of the work may take place a home.
This role is not an engagement role – the volunteer will not be required to be on site during the sessions. However, this could be explored at a later date.
We typically provide sessions for all of the school holidays:
Feb half term, Easter, May half term, Summer holidays, October half term.
Useful skills required:
- A creative person, good at thinking of ideas for children’s activities
- Good manual dexterity for creating templates and examples for the activities
- Good computer skills for using the internet, email, word
Training provided:
You will be required to attend an induction session.
Guidance in types of activities appropriate for different age groups
Skills volunteers can develop in the role:
- Team working
- Ability to work to a deadline
- Working in a busy environment
- A greater understanding of the types of activities museums provide
- A greater understanding of the types of activities for different children

- All equipment will be provided
- Free tea/coffee and biscuits
