Children's and Family Workshop Volunteer

Main purpose of role:

Assist the museum team with a range of family and child friendly workshops across both museums during school holidays and occasional weekends.

Main duties:

Assist staff with the following:

  • Developing ideas for events and workshop activities
  • Preparing materials for events / activities
  • Setting up equipment and resources for events
  • Welcoming and engaging visitors and promoting engagement with activities
  • Delivering family and children’s activities such as craft workshops
  • Supervising use of equipment / materials – keeping resources / areas stocked, safe and tidy.
  • Managing and serving refreshments for visitors
  • Supporting third party participants e.g. workshop leaders, event participants
  • Evaluating activities / visitor experience
  • Clearing Up

Event volunteers are always supported by museum staff and are not responsible for visitor behaviour or belongings.


Northampton Museum and Art Gallery & Abington Park Museum

Approximate time commitment and duration:

Workshop dates are as follows:

Abington Park Museum – Wednesdays on 27 July, 3, 10, 17 and 24 August

Volunteers to be available from 12 - 5.30pm

Northampton Museum & Art Gallery – Fridays on 29 July, 5, 12, 19 and 26 August

Volunteers to be available from 9.30am - 4pm

Useful skills required:

  • Team player but also able to work independently
  • Flexible approach and used to working in a busy environment
  • Reliable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Used to working with young children and families
  • Manual dexterity / crafting experience
  • Manual handling – moving equipment and materials.

Training provided:

All training will be provided.

You will be required to attend an induction session. 

Briefing of the activities will take place at the beginning of each session and some information will be sent out in advance.
