Volunteer Tour Guide - Abington Park Museum

Main purpose of role:

Northampton Museums & Art Gallery has a small team of volunteers who deliver tours at Abington Park Museum once a month and also on a bespoke basis. The tours explain the history of the building and the people associated with it and the surrounding park.

This is an opportunity to join the team, deliver engaging and interesting tours and discover more about Abington Park Museum.

Main duties:

  • Deliver interesting and engaging tours for the public.
  • Guide members of the public around the building safely.
  • Deliver up to four scheduled tours a year on the third Sunday of a month.
  • Act as a back-up in case the delegated tour guide has to cancel at short notice.
  • Deliver bespoke tours to groups.

Location:

Abington Park Museum, Park Avenue South, NN1 5LW

Approximate time commitment and duration:

  • Scheduled tours take place on a Sunday afternoon 2 – 2.45pm – volunteer would be expected to deliver four a year.
  • Bespoke group tours take place on an ad-hoc basis.

Useful skills required:

  • A keen interest in the history and heritage of Abington, the park and museum.
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills
  • A good level of literacy
  • A good level of spoken English
  • Able to research topics and learn new information
  • Able to relate to the different types of visitors on the tours

Training provided:

  • Information and knowledge sharing on the History of Abington Park and the Manor House
  • Guidance on leading a group around the building
  • Existing tour structure

  • Confidence
