The Bradlaugh Riot

Group of people in the foreground all shouting and throwing objects, with buildings in the background.

Sunday 6th October
2-3pm
Northampton Museum & Art Gallery
The forgotten story of arguably the most important political campaign of the mid 19th century, when the idealism and passion of the 1868 election was tainted by divisive religious bigotry, and how the frustration and anger of the radical candidate’s supporters exploded into violence when he came bottom of the poll at the by-election of October 1874. This talk is presented by Chris Pounds from the Charles Bradlaugh Society.
