Main purpose of role

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is looking for volunteers to join a team to help improve the storage and care of museum objects and their use in exhibitions, events and research. The collections include a range of objects from 6000BP to the present day. This includes archaeology, coins and numismatics, shoes, clothing and textile and social history, decorative art and fine art objects.

This is an opportunity to support the Museum service with administrative tasks including email/letter writing, scanning, taking minutes and notes for monthly meetings, filling in spreadsheets of data filing. Join a team of volunteers to help with condition checking, packing and boxing these important objects. No experience is necessary and full training will be given.

Main duties

  • Creating and sending letters to donors
  • Creating and managing spreadsheets of data
  • Writing minutes for monthly meetings and preparing agendas.
  • Recording box numbers on spreadsheets
  • Scanning

Location

Guildhall, Northampton, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery

Approximate time commitment and duration

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday between 10.00am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm

(note that volunteers are welcome to undertake a full day if preferred)

We would ask you to commit  ½-1 day a week regularly for 6 months.

Useful skills required

  • Computer skills using Office
  • Attention to detail and procedures
  • Ability to work on own initiative or as a team
  • Interest in Museum collections
