Eleanor Cross study day

The archaeology of medieval Northampton by Andy Chapman

A watercolour painting showing the Northampton Eleanor Cross in the centre of a grass covered mound with trees around and vista in distance

Presentation summary

Andy provided background context by discussing the important medieval town of Northampton that Queen Eleanor would have known. Years of excavation have produced a good understanding of the medieval town and the castle and how it has changed over time. In particular the Royal apartments and the associated cesspits in which were found the remains of bones of animals that could only have been owned and perhaps eaten by royalty.

Speaker biography

Andy Chapman has recently retired from his post with MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology), Northampton, after 45 years in field archaeology, mainly with Northamptonshire Archaeology. However, he still has a number of reports to bring to completion and will, therefore, continue to add to the current collection available through Research Gate.
