Charlotte Ashman creates linocut prints inspired by canal life, blending heritage and nature aboard historic narrowboats.
Charlotte lives and works from a pair of 1935 narrowboats on the UK’s canal network, where the rhythms of life on the water shape her creative practice. Raised in South Northamptonshire, she grew up surrounded by Northampton’s screen-printing tradition and later studied BA Fine Art at University of Northampton.
Working across sculpture, painting and photography, Charlotte has also been deeply involved in community arts. In 2017, she returned to printmaking, teaching herself linocut as an accessible, low-equipment process perfectly suited to small, mobile spaces.
Her prints draw directly from everyday life afloat—capturing the changing seasons, working details and quiet beauty of Britain’s canals. Reflecting the nation’s transport heritage, her work reveals the living links between past and present that remain etched into the waterways today.
You can view and purchase Charlotte’s work now in the Selling Gallery at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery.
