There are many notable Northamptonians that have worked hard to make the town we live in today a better place.

Portraits of Northampton

To celebrate the wealth of characters and diversity of people who make up Northampton today, we commissioned photographer Paul O’Leary to create a series of 24 photographic portraits. Each one explores what it is to be a Northamptonian and how they contribute to the town.

Carnivals and fairs

Following the industrial revolution, people found themselves with more free time and annual fairs became popular social events.During the 1900s Northampton introduced the Town Show at Abington Park, Northampton Carnival, originally a cycle parade, and ball bearing manufacturers British Timken held their own annual agricultural show.

Gallones Ice Cream

For hundreds of years, people from all over the world have settled in Northampton and brought with them aspects of their culture, especially food and drink. We don’t just enjoy our food and drink; we have a great history of making it too. For those with a sweet tooth, there are numerous flavours of ice cream available at Gallone’s.

Phipps Brewery

Beer has been brewed in Northampton since the 1500s and was at the height of success during the 1800s, with numerous breweries dotted around the town.

Theatres

One hundred years ago, Northampton had numerous theatres that satisfied a demand for entertainment. Theatres wowed audiences with varied programmes of musical and variety acts, plays, pantomimes, ballets and operas.

Northampton Sports

There is nothing quite like a sporting event to bring out the passionate side of Northampton people. Sport brings people together in a unique way. Whether it’s a pre or post-match drink, the songs we sing or the team colours we wear, we feel a collective sense of belonging, where lifelong friendships and bonds are made.
