This is the earliest work on display by Fiddes, painted when the artist was 17 as a gift for his mother. This painting depicts the Courteenhall Estate in south Northamptonshire and shows a distinctive style to the other works on display. 

This painting records the 1956 Kowloon Riots which Fiddes witnessed first-hand while serving in the Northamptonshire Regiment who were stationed in Hong Kong.

This is one of nine paintings in our collection where Fiddes records the conflict in Northern Ireland. These oil paintings were based on sketches he produced during his visit to Belfast in May 1972.

In this painting Fiddes creates a collage of Goya’s famous paintings, several of which Fiddes saw when he visited the Prado in 1958.

Several of Fiddes’ paintings show his commentary on the events of the world and how people are affected by them. Often, he shows how figures react to the action unfolding around them as is evident in this painting of the perilous crossing made by migrants from Libya to Lampedusa.

Here figures tell the world who they are through the clothing, possessions and the playing cards they display whilst hiding their faces.
